There is a breed recommender at the bottom of the page. You answer some questions and they tell you what breed would fit your lifestyle. Can I get advice on choosing my next dog?
well, if you know people who have pet allergies and come over often, you would want a poodle because they don't have the same dander as other dogs and do not commonly affect those with allergies. a greyhound is a great don, but is a more high-maintenance dog. they have a lot of energy and constantly need exercise, they would be good if you have a large Yard. the best would be a collie. they are loyal dogs and do OK in houses with smaller yards. they are not very aggressive, but are protective, such as if a robber or what not comes. they do have longer hair so that means more coat maintenance. but overall, they are a great companion and family dog.
Terriers tend to be more territorial and sometimes don't really get along well with other dogs, but they are loyal companions, and might even kill rodents if you have a rat problem. :) My mom has two terriers, the younger one is very friendly and sociable, the older one is a grumpy old man, and likes to be left alone, but both are very sweet. I hear Standard poodles are pretty smart, and don't shed. I don't know much about the cons of owning one though. My grandmother loves poodles, but I don't think she's ever had a standard poodle. I've known some Greyhounds. They seem pretty shy, but I don't know if that is necessarily a characteristic of the breed or just the individuals I have known. But they seem to be very sweet dogs, although reserved. Since they have short hair, grooming won't be much of a problem. I don't know much about Collies or Salukis, sorry. But if Collies are anything like Shelties, they are good dogs. My brothers wife's grandmother has two shelties and she used to breed them. They're smart and sweet dogs, but they have a lot of hair.
I would just research all the breeds if I were you. You never know what breed will be best for you for sure. If you have an active lifestyle, get a retriever, german shepherd, or if you want a smaller breed corgis are good. Smart, easy to train and fun.
If you have a more relaxed lifestyle a basset hound might be good for you.
If you plan on kids, there are many breeds that do very well with children and will even protect them. Akitas, Boxers and Bergamascos. But there are some breeds that aren't great with kids. Terriers wouldn't be one of the dogs I would want to have around too much if I wanted a baby, for example. Not that they can't be good with kids, but they tend to be territorial and a new baby might freak them out.
Also what about size? What can you handle in size? Standard poodles are big, and if not trained properly, might be a handful on walks. But that can be true of any dog, you just want to be sure he won't drag you.
I don't know your lifestyle, so really, you should do the research on them, and remember that someone may have one of the breeds you mentioned, but not all dogs from that breed are like that. It depends quite a bit on the individual animal too.
if u have kids try a retriver theyre friendly
My mom has a dog book I'll tell you a bit of each. The saluki's sight is remarkable, and his hereditary traits often crop out. His beuty is like that of a thoroghbred horse; grace and symmetry of form; clean-cut and graceful; far seeing eyes- an expression of dignity mixed with gentleness.
The welsh terrier, cleverly made hunter, well mannered easy to handle.
A standard poodle, gained special fame as a water worker, poodles are good swimmers, they also have there fame for there beautiful coate.
the greyhound, swift as a ray of light, graceful as a swallow, and wise as a solomon.
the colie, there lovley herders they serve a devoted family loves children, beautiful in appearance, loyal and afectionate in all actions, self made gardian. an Ideal family companian.
my openian is the colie sounds ronderful , but greyhounds are great too
I have to Siberian Huskies and they are the best. Very loyal but very energetic. They love to run and play and go swimming. And they are great with my 18 month old baby. And if you bring home a new puppy they will accept them in a heart beat. Huskies love puppies!!
It's been quite some time, but I have had a Poodle before ... we named him Pierre. I was 5 when we got him, he lived 13 years, and I'm now 36. I can tell you that he was a bit high maintainence when it came to his coat. Needs regular cutting, but I don't honestly remember him being a huge problem as far as shedding. Again, it's been awhile. I do remember that he was easy for us to house train, and very affectionate. I remember he was good with strangers (to him they were strangers) that came to our house too ... never had any problems with him going after anyone or being too aggressive. Not sure if you have children or not, but I would say they are great with kids. We also had a mixed breed at the time we had Pierre and he was great interacting with him. He was great with other dogs when we took him out as well.
My grandparents had a miniature Collie and she was beautiful. Again, she was easy to house train, although not as affectionate (in my opinion) as the Poodle we had. I remember she shed alot, but not too much to get rid of her. I wish I could give you more information on them ... and if I think of anything else, or if I hear of anything else, I can always come back here to let you know.
I know you don't have this breed listed, but I currently own 2 miniature Chihuahuas. Through the years, I have gotten more interested in dogs and know more about these little guys than any other breed. They get a bad rap, but in my opinion, they are the most lovable pet I have ever owned. I have actually been able to train my 2 little ones to use a regular litter pan, and a few other tricks. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a new pet, especially if they live in an apartment ... they don't take up too much room. :)
Anyway, if you happen to have any question, please feel free to let me know.
