What advice would you give to a compulsive gambler?

If someone close to you came to you and told you they had a gambling problem, that they couldn't control it and that it was ruining their life. What would you say to them? Would you understand? Would you sympathize, or would you criticize?

If this person was close to be i would go with the tough love approach. tell them it is unacceptable, but i understand them, and want them to get better. Go with them to try to get help, from a treatment facility. It is a disease just as addiction to drugs and alcohol is
I'm with Amanda on this. Understanding compulsive gambling for what it is does not imply forgiveness but forceful opposition to that behavior.
