Any advice for a person going to get a fish who has two cats?

I'm thinking about getting a fish, but the problem is that I have two cats. Also, I don't have a lot of places high up where I can put a fish bowl. Is there anyway I can like train my cats not to climb or get to my fish? I know probably not knowing how cats are.Any advice for a person going to get a fish who has two cats?
I have two cats as well and they leave my fish tanks alone. The tank should have a sturdy aquarium hood.

If you do have issues with the cats: Cats can be trained. They are just stubborn. Cats can learn to associate approaching the tank with an unpleasant experience.

~I read in a training book called Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor that a woman she knew accidentally dropped a pan in the kitchen, while at the same time, her cat jumped on the couch. When the pan clattered on the floor the cat leapt off the couch and never climbed on it again.

~I actually know someone who shrieks like a banshee every time the cats go near her fish tank. A high-pitched whistle would achieve the same effect and be easier on your vocal cords.Any advice for a person going to get a fish who has two cats?
I have 11 aquariums and 2 cats, I've never once had an issue. My best friend has a custom goldfish tank with no cover and the cats don't want to get wet so have never gone fishing. The majority of people who have aquariums that I've ever spoke to have cats, its really not a common issue.

Remember that aquariums have weight and need to be covered.
I've never had a problem with my cats and tanks. I just suggest you get a large one, like 20 or more. This way it's weighty enough that they can't shove it or anything My girl loves to watch my guppy tank, and they come right up to the glass to investigate her! She particularly loves my pale betta : ) He comes right to the surface to watch her right back.

My cats never cared for my 60 gallon, except when I used to have my pacu in there. Now I've got gourmi and parrots mostly and they could care less.

Best of Luck!
Get a spray bottle, if the cats go near it spray them so they learn not to go near it. If you have a medium size plus tank with a lid then they shouldn't be able to get into it. My kittens don't try to get our tank lids open.
A fish bowl is unsuitable for any fish even a betta a betta needs at least a 2.5 gallon tank that is heated and a filter. the tank will have a hood which will keep the cats out and the fish in.
Maybe you could put it in a room with a door and make sure the cats never can get in. Or you could get a cover heavy enough the couldn't tip it off
Just make sure you get something with a good cover. I have cats and they never bother the fish at all.
put screen over it
This is very simple.

Just get a tank that has a hood.

And for the sake of the fish that you are getting, please , please get a propper setup.

eg

10 gallon aquarium.

Filter.

Heater ( if tropical, if its goldfish than you don't need that. )

Bubbler.

Decorations.

Gravel

Tetra Color Tropical Crisps ( check these out at Petco or Petsmart.com )

Themometer. ( not essential but helps a lot if you have tropical aquarium. )

Real or fake plants.

A net ( to get the fish out of the tanks for different reasons. eg tank cleaning )

Dechlorinator ( removes chlorine, chloromine and heavy metals that are harmful and fatal to your fish. )

Make sure you get a tank that has a hood, that way the cats can't bother the fish and you can put the tank wherever you like!

Also ( i know you don't like to hear all this! ) you need to cycle the tank

cycling the tank is vital for a fish's health.

you need to get 2-3 fish ( zebra danios, very strong and entertaining fish ) and put them into a tank that has a filter, the fish obviously crap, so that makes ammoina, the filter turns that ammonia into nitrates then into nitrites ( or vise versa ) that then makes a good bacteria that helps your fish , you can tell this is happening by seeing green algae growing on the walls of your aquarium or you can simply get a test kit.

You can tell there is an ammonia spike when you can smell your tank ( your tank should smell like water and nothing else ).

then when your ammonia and nitrates ( or nitrites ) readings are positive, you can add fish!!!

this is a good combonation for a 10 gallon tank

3 Zebra danios

1 Dwarf Gourami

2 Platies

5 Neon Tetras ( that is slightly overstocked but if you keep up on feeding and cleaning and of course water changes it should be ok.)

I hope i helped!!

Another thing, get a gravel siphon that makes cleaning tanks much, much easier!!

Have a great day and may your fish live a long, happy life!!!!
