I am watching a relatives dog she is adorable a med size terrier sthitu mix. My relative provided all the food and treats and leash, but do you have any advice for me as this is the first time I am puppy sitting for a few nights at my home?
What are some fun things to do with the dog? What is a good sechedule for the dog she is a female and of course needs to go out to go to the bathroom etc?FIrst time puppy sitting at my home any advice?
I've been dog sitting part time for 5 years now and have watched terriers and shih-tzus, but not that specific mixxed breed. I used to have a Shih-tzu - they're my favorite dog.
Anyway, it'd be good to have her sleep in her crate if she has one. If not, put her in a secure area where she can't get into anything and if she has an accident in the night, it won't be difficult to clean up. If she cries at night, and is sleeping near you, reassure her it'll be o.k. and try to go back to sleep. If she isn't near you, try to just ignore it. She'll be o.k. and happy to see you in the morning. I know that may sound cruel, but it's all part of the training.
All puppies love to chew on anything they can get their teeth on so keep things up and away from her that she might choke on or wooden items that slivers might get lodged in her throat.
She'll have a ton of energy and being that mix, may be a bit high strung... so during the day, it's good to walk her a couple times, and play with her a lot - if she likes to fetch that would be good or some dogs like you to chase them around. When you walk her, try to lead the walk and have her beside you or a step or two behind. Most dogs see the one who leads as the boss or alpha dog, so if she's insistant that she leads, she'll be of the mindset that she's the boss and that can create long term problems for everyone.
Also another potty outing before bed is good too. Let her out frequently during the day - probably every couple of hours. She'll sleep when she needs to. The key is to not let her sleep ALL day!!
Follow the owner's instructions when it comes to treats and food. Most Shih-Tzus don't do well with people food - I'm not sure about this mix exactly but it'd probably be best to not give in to any begging, whining, or ';sad puppy eyes'; that tend to come out around meal time. KEEP ALL CHOCOLATE AND RASINS OUT OF HER REACH! They can be fatal!!
Remember she's a puppy and like kids have a natural knack for getting into trouble. While puppyhood can be exhausting at times, it can be a lot of fun!FIrst time puppy sitting at my home any advice?
That all depends on the age of the puppy. Is she crate trained? If she is less than 14 weeks old, she probably still needs a potty break in the middle of the night. If she's still potty-training, she needs to be let out very often to minimize accidents in the house. Puppies are big chewers, so make sure you have some good puppy chews like Nylabones to keep her from picking up things she shouldn't. Fun things to do: just play with her. Take her for a walk (if she's old enough). Ask your relative all these questions too -- what kind of basic commands she already knows, her ';quirks'; and habits, favorite toys, or any other helpful tips.
well when my dog was a puppy.. we had everything valuable away where she could reach..make the puppy feel as comfortable as possible! make her a bed..play with her a lot..give her lots of love..and pay attention to her!! when she starts to move around and looks like she is uncomfortable let her outside or when she is sitting at the door let her out..and if she has an accident on the floor use vinegar and paper towels to clean up the mess.
if you don't like your relatives try buying some shoe from goodwill and rubbing hamburger all over them =:-)%26gt;
all young dogs like to play tug of war, chase balls, eat cheese Burgers. some like popcorn catch( feed it some popcorn if he likes it then try tossing it in the air one piece at a time, my friends dobby thinks this is the greatest treat/game ever)
