I am so overwhelmed! I want to ship my car by train preferably from Maryland to Phoenix, Arizona. I have tried looking information up through google but it is a lot of information that seems like it will take forever and a day to sift through without much payoff.
Also, I only seem to be getting information for trucking companies which is really very expensive. Does anyone have any ideas where I can go and how much this will cost?
Please help!Any advice for shipping a car from east to west coast?
Some auto transporters will ship by train, but things are usually done by truck. There are limited routes that companies can use rail economically on. Going west out of Chicago and I believe Buffalo NY are two that come to mind as reasonable to ship a vehicle on.
Baltimore, MD has Penn Station, which is great for passengers, but vehicles are shipped on freight trains which operate rather differently. Here is kind of what I mean:
Freight trains operate in regions. For example one that is popular on the east coast is CSX. Service map at: https://www.csx.com/?fuseaction=about.ma鈥?/a>
They can work with other rail companies to ship in other areas without a problem. However, your vehicle is one of say 16 cars on the rail car. Each with different origins and destinations. So suddenly you can see how this becomes a logistical nightmare. On rail car, several different rail companies responsible for getting it to several different destinations to have one of 16 vehicles removed from within.
While rail is likely the future of car shipping, the future is unfortunately 10 years away. For now you are stuck with trucking a car ';vehicle transport'; or driveway, which as another answer mentioned is when you hire someone to drive it for you.
Vehicle transport is by far the most popular and in most cases it is the most economical.
Here is the simple process for you though.
1. Check out the ratings and reviews of the auto transporters that have moved vehicle from MD to AZ on http://www.transportreviews.com/. Here is a link to the MD to AZ report: http://www.transportreviews.com/director鈥?/a>
It shows that the average transport with a 5 out of 5 star rated company is right at $1,000. Some are around $950, but it looks like the $1,000 range is most popular.
But check out the current prices. Get multiple quotes from up to 10 auto transporters at: http://www.autotransporter.com/ They get quotes from companies that are well ranked on Transport Reviews.com.
I wish I had a perfect solution for you, but unfortunately this is about it as far as moving a vehicle.
Good luck.

There are people like myself that would drive your vehicle to where you want for a cost %26amp; planefare to return back to where I live, However if you look in the yellow pages under moving or auto's you may find something in there that fits your interest.
Try visiting an auto repair shop in Maryland. http://www.autorepairshopreview.com/Mary鈥?/a> They can help you with your questions. Try calling a few places and compare what they say.
